Life in Johannesburg, South Africa

Hi everyone! This is Michaela Winberg blogging from Johannesburg, South Africa, where our group of Klein students has spent nearly two weeks studying abroad. We’ve visited some amazing places in the few short weeks we’ve been here, including:

The Apartheid Museum, where we learned about the history of Apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s lasting legacy after he became South Africa’s first president in 1994.

Maboneng, a precinct in downtown Johannesburg that houses a street market every Sunday. Local vendors sell jewelry, clothes, art and delicious homemade Indian food, pictured below!

Newtown, another Johannesburg precinct which is famous for its murals painted by local artists.

Alexandra, a township Johannesburg that was established during Apartheid times. We even saw Nelson Mandela’s first home in South Africa. Across the street from the historic home, there’s a mural commemorating his time spent in the township.

The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation, which is Johannesburg’s public-funded radio and TV news station.

And the Koppies, which is basically a gigantic field in the Melville neighborhood of Johannesburg that has a stunning view of the skyline.

We even had class under a palm tree one day with the incredible Professor Linn Washington. I feel so lucky to be learning and expanding my journalistic skills in such a beautiful and enriching city.

Next week, we head off to Cape Town, where we spend the last two weeks of our time in South Africa. I can’t wait to keep learning here! Talk to you all later.
